A Tribute to the Green Heart of Hamilton

Hamilton, Ontario, is home to an astonishing variety of plant life: lush forests, wetlands, meadows, and escarpment slopes alive with color and texture. Within these diverse ecosystems grow hundreds of vascular plants that quietly sustain the region’s wildlife and contribute to the city’s natural beauty.

Our Fragile Environment is an initiative that shines a light on this living richness, and the newly completed volume, Vascular Plants of Hamilton (Our Free Educational Resource), is a stunning example of what happens when art and ecology intertwine.

Featuring detailed illustrations created by Karen Logan, this unique resource captures the grace and complexity of Hamilton’s flora. Through delicate watercolours and meticulous documentation from the Hamilton Naturalists' Club and The City Of Hamilton, Karen brings to life species both familiar and rare, reminding readers how deeply connected we are to the plants that surround us.

This work is supported by the collective knowledge of organizations such as the Hamilton Naturalists’ Club and the Hamilton Conservation Authority, whose members and researchers have long dedicated themselves to studying and protecting the region’s natural heritage.

A Free Resource to Explore and Enjoy

The Vascular Plants of Hamilton book is now available for everyone to explore. Visitors can view it right here on the site as an interactive flipbook, designed to make every page turn feel like a quiet walk through the forest. For those who prefer a copy of their own, a free downloadable PDF is also provided below.

Whether you are a student, artist, naturalist, or simply a lover of the outdoors, this collection invites you to look closer and to notice the veins of a leaf, the shape of a seedpod, or the way a flower catches light at dusk. These moments of attention deepen our understanding of Hamilton’s fragile ecosystems and the urgent need to preserve them.

Looking Ahead

Vascular Plants of Hamilton is the first in a growing series of illustrated inventories celebrating the city’s biodiversity. Future volumes will highlight Hamilton’s fish, animals, insects, fungi, birds, and mosses, forming a comprehensive portrait of local life. Together, these books will stand as a testament to both the natural wonders of this region and the creative power of collaboration between art and science.

Through Our Fragile Environment, we are reminded that beauty and knowledge belong to everyone and that protecting the natural world begins with noticing it.
