Our Fragile Environment
A Resource For Identifying Species In Hamilton, Ontario
Celebrating Hamilton’s Living Heritage
Every corner of Hamilton tells a story. From the wildflowers that edge the escarpment to the fish that swim beneath its waterfalls, life here is deeply connected. Our Fragile Environment was created to honour that connection—to help residents, students, and visitors recognize the incredible biodiversity that thrives right here at home.
Each illustrated volume in the series is a bridge between art and ecology, combining scientific research with detailed artwork by Karen Logan. These free, public resources are made possible through the collaboration of the Hamilton Naturalists’ Club, the Hamilton Conservation Authority, and the City of Hamilton, whose shared commitment to conservation and education has made this project possible.
Why It Matters
Hamilton’s environment is both resilient and vulnerable. As the city grows, understanding the ecosystems that sustain it becomes more important than ever. By learning about the species around us - plants, insects, animals, and beyond - we become stewards of the land we share. Our Fragile Environment invites everyone to take part: to observe, to learn, and to protect the delicate balance that makes Hamilton’s natural spaces so extraordinary.
